"Stare, pry, listen, eavesdrop. Die knowing something. You are not here
long."
Walker Evans

Press Release

JOHNSONBURG – Documentary photographer Walker Evans said, "Stare, pry, listen, eavesdrop. Die knowing something. You are not here long."

This quotation is the foundation of the artist statement for “Transient Moments” – a photography exhibition by Katie Weidenboerner. The show will open Nov. 3 at the Flemish House Art Gallery, Market Street, Johnsonburg.

The artist defines "Transient Moments" as the everyday moments defining: where we are, where we have been, and where we are going.

“As quickly as the world comes into place in that moment, it fades away just as quickly. But for that one frame I have a concise vision, realization, or appreciation of the millisecond I am standing in. I hope my audience can grasp something from it also,” Weidenboerner said. “In a world where the idea of time and its effect on our culture are both ever-changing and ambiguous concepts, my relationship with my camera has been a complex obsession.”

The show consists of: 16 hand-framed photographs which have been created over the last two years; a multimedia slideshow of photographs taken by 25 people answering questions about how they see their community changing; and a multi-sensory piece which recounts a journey to an Irish holy well.

“All of these pieces are works that are ever-growing,” Weidenboerner said. “I get up every morning, think about this idea and my photography and say to myself – I need to do this.”

Each photograph has a tone of documentation of the social climate of this region and the effects national and global topics on this region.

“Latent, dynamic, colorful, gray, abstract, straight, soft, aggressive - your world, as well as these photographs, are what you make them,” Weidenboerner said. “Join me to form, reform, or hold strong these images.”

Weidenboerner, 23, is the daughter of Peter and Lucy Weidenboerner. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, concentrating in Photography and Women’s Studies.

The artist reception will be held 7 – 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, and artist meet-ups will be held 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.
