Connecting to Field Notes Memo Books Creatively Through Johnsonburg's Hometown Paper Mill History, from my Studio in the PA Wilds
Field Notes memo books have been in my life and a part of many flatlays, note taking or product promos, for my artisan business, since 2016. I love their vibe and, of course, quality. These sweet memo books are fountain pen friendly which is important as I take notes at restaurants, save quotes that reach out and grab me or sketch a design idea. In the above flatlay you see a memo book from their National Parks collection. I try to pick a 3-pack out of the 18 memo books, from this collection, celebrating America's parks, when I can. <3
I cannot resist adding them to Friday flatlays, to be posted on social media! Here is a grouping of tools used during the process of making jewelry which includes note taking of course. Look at that Kaweco Brass Sport fountain pen on the Portland edition. My very first Field Notes collection was Shenandoah purchased in 2016. Their organic style was the perfect addition to this PA Wilds branded product photoshoot featuring a collection of nostalgic objects from my stash.
I have more Field Note collections on the shelves, around the house but, that is for another time.
So now, perhaps, you can understand why I am so excited to find out Domtar, located in Johnsonburg, PA., has a relationship through their consumer paper products with Field Notes!
Field Notes memo books are some of the most recognizable consumer paper products available. Did you know that some editions are made using Domtar’s Lynx® or Cougar® paper?
Field Notes and Domtar make a great pair because we both care about the paper and the creative details.
The iconic brand’s journey to becoming a cult-favorite for creators of all kinds started humbly in 2006 when graphic designer and eventual Field Notes cofounder Aaron Draplin took inspiration from his collection of farmers’ pocket notebooks to create memo books for his friends.

A truck lumbers down Route 219 towards the Johnsonburg Mill, loaded with 25 tons of mixed hardwood chips perfect for making the Domtar Lynx® paper used in Field Notes® memo books. Let’s take a trip from the chipping facility to the paper mill to see the production process that turns chips into a sheet of high-quality paper on your desk.
I find great joy learning more and more about Johnsonburg's deep paper history. Thank-you Domtar for shining even more light on the oldest borough's, in Elk County, paper and lumber heritage.
"All Field Notes products — including those that include Domtar paper — are easily recyclable."
enjoy, take care-
